Classified ads connect people directly, so a little care goes a long way.

For buyers

• Meet in a public place and, if possible, take a friend.
• Inspect the item or service before you pay. Do not pay in advance to someone you have not met.
• Be wary of prices that look too good to be true, and of anyone who rushes you.
• Never share bank passwords, one-time codes or card PINs. A genuine seller never needs them.
• For jobs: a real employer never asks you to pay a fee to get hired.

For sellers

• Accept cash in person or a payment you can verify before handing anything over.
• Ignore overpayment offers and requests to send money back.
• Only share the contact details you are comfortable making public: they are shown on your ad.
